Executive: Professional & Business Ethics The Ethics Institute
Leon was appointed to the position of Executive: Professional and Business Ethics at The Ethics Institute on 1 July 2014. Prior to that he was a professor in the Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management (IPPM) at the University of Johannesburg where he taught industrial psychology and business and professional ethics for 26 years.
His area of specialisation is consultation in business and professional ethics to private sector organisations. His clients include AngloGoldAshanti, Basil Read, Nedbank, Vodacom, UNISA, MTN, First National Bank, Naspers and Harmony Gold.
The Ethics Institute is a non-profit, public benefit organisation. Our vision is: “Building an ethically responsible society.”
We pursue our vision through thought leadership, training and ethics advisory services. We work with the public and private sectors, professional bodies, and in partnership with organisations that share our values.
The Ethics Institute offers a wide array of services related to the governance and management of ethics in organisations and professions. These services include:
Training Public and in-house training programmes on a range of ethics-related themes, such as: • Social & Ethics Committee programmes; • Ethics management programmes; • Ethics Officer Certification Programme (EOCP); • Corruption prevention programmes; and • Continued Professional Development (CPD) Programmes.
Advisory services Consultation to public and private sector organisations and professional associations on matters related to the management of ethics. These advisory services include: • Ethics management advisory services; • Corruption prevention advisory services; • Professional ethics advisory services; and • Ethics committee advisory services.
Assessments Assisting organisations with gauging their current state of ethics through a variety of assessment instruments, which include: • Organisational ethics risk assessment; • Organisational ethical culture assessment; • Internal audit of ethics assessment; • Code of ethics assessment; • Ethics management gap analysis; and • Minimum anti-corruption capacity assessment.
Certification Certifying certain ethics-related services and service providers in order to provide assurance that these services and service providers meet relevant ethics standards. Certification services include: • Ethics Officer certification; and • Ethics Hotline service provider certification.
Project management Acting as project manager for donor organisations wishing to enhance good governance, corruption prevention, or professional ethics. Services in this regard include: • The design of project plans and proposals; • The implementation of approved projects; • The monitoring and review of projects; and • Reporting on project progress and effectiveness.
